About this place
Turn into the narrow alleyway off Shinagawa Station's Konan Exit, and fragrant plumes of charcoal smoke signal the entrance to Iburiya. Inside this unpretentious, retro-tinged space, each table holds its own shichirin charcoal brazier, providing intense radiant heat for grilling.
The menu focuses on a carefully curated lineup of wagyu sourced from the meat market. Alongside standard favorites like wagyu short rib and loin, diners can sample distinct textures across specialty cuts, including limited-quantity top blade (misuji), rump cap (ichibo), and thick-cut korotan beef tongue. Offal is also well represented with skirt meat (harami), upper rumen (kamimino), and a 150-gram mixed offal platter that cooks over the wire mesh until rich and aromatic.
Between grilling rounds, side dishes such as sesame-scented munchi salad, napa cabbage kimchi, and assorted namul vegetables balance out the richness. Plucking freshly charred bites from the grate while sipping a cold Asahi draft beer, a highball, or makgeolli rounds out the tabletop experience. For the final course, hearty gukbap rice soups and bibimbap come in both standard and small portions, alongside a chilled, light Japanese-style cold noodle dish to suit remaining appetites.
Given the dining room's compact footprint, the dinner rush fills up quickly, making an advance reservation advisable. Because the restaurant accepts cash only, make sure to come prepared before taking your seat at the coals.
